Finally, after so much anticipation I got the new Pseudo album, and it was definitely worth the wait.
The album starts in a big, catchy, in your face way, (I’m sick and tired of track 1 always been and intro) “Sing, Oh! Goddess, Peleus Son’s Wrath” is one of the catchiest songs ever written by Pseudo, the chorus is genius “Pest!!!, Wrath!!!” this could easily become and anthem; the song is classic Pseudo, strong, raw death metal, but this time around everything sounds better, the production is better and the mixing has also improved a lot; I also noticed a more controlled flow in every song, meaning, that the structure of the songs is a bit more technical and planned out.
After a great beginning we go into “Vile And Coward” in this song you can start to notice one of the two major problems with this record, the lyrics sound way to forced into the tracks, you know like they wrote the lyrics first and later they just pushed them inside a song even if they didn’t fit. This track is brutal, a bit more mid tempo death, with a great dark atmosphere created by some razor sharp riffs, a good double bass pounds in the background constantly (too bad the drums don’t sound a bit more) while the guitar ventures from time to time into some quite interesting solos.
The whole album sounds very melancholic even though this is raw death metal; it has a special quality that manages to truly capture the escence, the entire concept about The Iliad in a obscure and disturbing way.
“Singular Contest…” continues with a destructive pattern highlighted by the drum work and a great selection of riffs, the chorus is quite catchy as well “Hector Fought 'Cause He Provoke…” good track showing perhaps that Pseudo’s music is not about uncontrolled aggression but a rather conscious force that gets inside you with every tune.
“Desperate Struggle…” is a very interesting track since it’s mainly conceived by a line of dialog, explaining Achilles determination to destroy the murderers of Patroclus, at the end of this track some heavy guitars come into play, and the entire dialog becomes a condemnation.
The guitars by the end of “Antenor’s Sons” are somehow heavy metal, a nice change of style kicks in almost as the song is ending to provide a different optic to the entire piece.
The album is good, surely the best ever made by Pseudo, is just that maybe they should consider someone else for the vocal department, because even though Mauricio was some nice growls he doesn’t sound very flexible in some songs, he sort of drowns in his own growls from time to time.
“Dolonia” the title track speed things up and thanks to the amazing line of the guitars it keeps everything fresh and interesting. “Patroclus’ Cadaver” begins with a rather “cold growl” here’s were you can clearly hear that Mauricio can’t reach some the deep growls required for some segments, still the song is among the best on the album, having a nice unique riff, followed by some aggressive drum work.
“Sound Of My Sorrow…” is an amazing instrumental piece is beautiful, fast and it shows all the talent these guys have.
To conclude, Dolonia is the best record ever recorded by Pseudostratiffied Epithelium, if you are a fan of the band, you better get this record, if you haven’t listen to their raw death metal perhaps its time for you to get off your ass and buy a copy of this album.
