Introduction
Discography
Just how important is the attitude in a black metal band? Well apparently is one of its most important ingredients. Hemnur is a black metal project, it’s not a band because is a studio development; two people take care of this raw black metal project, and like pretty much every black metal band their names are Frediablo and Heksblod.
Aiming for an old school spirit and the simplicity only found in raw and primitive black metal sounds, this Norwegians have created a record worthy of the attention from many bands and fans that are just tired of pretentious musicians whose only goals are to show off and not to write fun music.
Frediablo can very well be a poster boy for black metal, not because he paints his face with white mascara, but simply because he writes his music and says to everything… “I don’t fucking care” and that’s the black metal attitude we all love, that defiance and cynical remarks that really make you wonder, Why the fuck is this guy playing music anyway? Well he plays, writes, records and even designs his album covers just for the fun of it; you can say there is nothing remotely close to a sell out artist in Hemnur.

"I have always been of the opinion though that the name of a band really doesn't really matter for shit... I mean, it's not important at all what the band is called, because it's the music that makes the name and not visa versa"
CR: How are you?
Frediablo: I am doing great thank you very much.

CR: Why don’t you tell us something about the history of the band, why was it created and what’s the purpose of it?
Frediablo:
Hemnur is a project I started back in 2004 as a way to get all my black/primitive metal ideas out of my system. I quickly discovered that I had enough of those ideas to actually piece together an entire album, and the creation of what is today known as Satanic Hellride began. I brought into this creation the girl Heksblod to mutilate the synth, and together we are Hemnur.

CR: What does Hemnur means? And why that name for the band?
Frediablo:
I'm not sure if Hemnur actually means anything? I came up with the word, and it's a combination of Norwegian and something that sounds Icelandic. Hemn is Norwegian for Revenge, and adding the letters UR to it, just made it sound more ancient and cold. I have always been of the opinion though that the name of a band really doesn't really matter for shit... I mean, it's not important at all what the band is called, because it's the music that makes the name and not visa versa. Hemnur might not even be an actual word, and I love that!!! At the end of the day you don't sit down and dislike or enjoy a band's music based on the band's name now do you? and if someone does, then that someone is a fucking idiot!!!.. Period!!!

CR: Frediablo you play pretty much every instrument, except for the synth, can we said then that this is a Frediablo’s project? You also has a lot of other projects if I’m not mistaken, which band is more important and the main one for you?
Frediablo:
I used to have a shitload of other projects and bands, but I quit everything except for Hemnur and Grimfist, and then I have a little Nu-Metal/Grindcore project going called Order Through Chaos, but other than that, I am completely music-free. I would not like to call Hemnur Frediablo's project though, because even if I play and compose most of the music, Heksblod still contributes enough to the point where I would be an asshole to call it MY project. On the other side though, you could say that Hemnur is my project, because if I decided to terminate its existence, I would not confront or ask Heksblod before doing so at all. I am in charge of this motherfucker, let there be no doubt about that, so I guess I am an asshole?... haha!!!

CR: Heksblod plays the synth, how did the two members of the band got in touch and why do you decided to work together?
Frediablo:
We have known each other for 13 years, and she is my best fucking friend on this fucked up planet of apes. Working with her is almost like working with myself. She knows me inside out, and I know her, and we do not need to speak words in order to communicate. Besides, she looks fantastic and I thought her face in the booklet would help sell five or six more cd's... ha ha ha !!!!

CR: In the Infernus Rex Press sheet they describe Hemnur’s music as anti-religious primitive black metal, is that label correct? Is there more to Hemnur’s music than that label?
Frediablo:
I feel that description is fairly correct. I guess I have to feel that way, because I think I'm the bastard who wrote that... ha ha!! But it was and still is pretty much what we are musically. I despise all religions, including so-called Satanists, because they are just as bad as the rest of the sheep. Why follow anything but your own reflection? and that is somewhat the underlined existence and backbone of Hemnur. We do whatever we feel like... on our own terms regardless of what is considered right or wrong in this watered down musical genre called Black Metal. The whole idea of black metal is individual freedom and working against the rules and laws that keep the normal man down like fucking robots!! Black metal has nothing to do with borrowing your mama's make-up kit, running around in the woods wearing tight leather pants looking like a whale and screaming HAIL SATAN !!!.. What the fuck man?!! It’s the music and the attitude that is black metal, not all the circus surrounding it... at least that's what I fucking think!!!

CR: What would you said the main force, the main inspiration begin your music is?
Frediablo:
Hate and frustration. I am sick to the bone of this planet and the people walking and breathing on it. It inspires me to see the level of ignorance and stupidity being displayed by man... I mean, just look around... it's the blind leading the blind, and the only hope is in these 3 words... Destroy, Erase, Improve!! That is an album title by the Swedish band Meshuggah, and it's so perfect!! Wipe everything out and start fresh. This shit inspires me cause I'd rather sit all alone making music than to take part in any social activity. Fuck that!! I was also fed up with working in "as a band" situation, having to deal with other people and their stupid opinions and attitudes, and just felt like creating something where I have total creative freedom.

CR: Are you guys dedicated just to music or do you have other “normal” jobs?
Frediablo:
We are dedicated to our music, but we have what you call "normal" jobs as well. If I wanted to make money from doing music, I sure as hell wouldn't play metal!!

CR: Let’s talk a little about your latest release, Satanic Hellride; this is Hemnur first full length album, what was the most difficult thing about writing and recording this record?
Frediablo:
Nothing was difficult!! Writing and recording Satanic Hellride was like cutting through warm butter with a butcher's knife. We record music that comes to us naturally and there for it's also very easy to record. It's simplistic, totally stripped of and wanking "look how fast I can play" guitar solos... there is no fancy drum tricks and shit, nor any other self-indulging progressive bullshit !!! It's primitive and simple... just the way it was meant to be when we wrote it.

"It is true that I have read about all these fucked up priests raping kids and shit, but that is to no surprise to me. These people have been mistreating the human race from day one, so why should their second rate act fool anyone to believe that they are anything but total hypocrisy?"

CR: I love the intro of this album, some atmospheric sounds and then “puuuum” it hits you in the face, this first track is title as the album or vice-versa Satanic Hellride, was that effect of first calm and then the storm the idea to introduce your music to the listener?
Frediablo:
The intro was just put on there to give the album some extra length and serves no deeper purpose. It's a cool contrast to the actual songs, but other than that... fuck it!!

CR: In the track Fucked by your god, there is something like the sound of a women crying and then some growling, what exactly was that, and what does it mean towards the song? There is also a phrase in the lyrics, Religious pedophiles, is that your direct view on the priest and all the rapes they have been involve around the world?
Frediablo:
The track is called Fucked By Your Christ, not God!!.. But anyway, to answer your question, it has no direct view on anything. It is true that I have read about all these fucked up priests raping kids and shit, but that is to no surprise to me. These people have been mistreating the human race from day one, so why should their second rate act fool anyone to believe that they are anything but total hypocrisy? They preach one thing, then turn around and do the opposite... much like man in general. As long as they fuck other potential future priests who really gives a shit?!! They probably just do to others what their teachers did to them, don't you think?... haha!!!

CR: This album is very…the guitars are very basic but powerful and with some great riffs, very catchy, was it hard for you to play all the instruments and finding the correct place for everything?
Frediablo:
No, like I said, this album was done without any problems at all... the way it is if one is prepared and ready. Like you say it's very basic and yet powerful, and that just proves the old cliché saying "Less Is More" to be right on the ticker!! I hate complex sounding shit, and one thing is for a fact that I could not play a complex riff to save my life, but I still wouldn't do it if I possessed the skills... I just don't see and hear the point in music like that, but then again, may by it's just me?

CR: There is a track, Ravnsvart (Ravenblack) that is written in Norwegian (sorry don’t know what language it is) can you tell us what the lyrics are all about?
Frediablo:
It's about living with a soul that is ravenblack, cold and almost dead to this world. Nothing more or nothing less, but if someone else find some other meaning to my lyrics, then good for them, I really don't care!!

CR: The album is a very complete work, it has what a black metal album should have, darkness, speed, and a lot of satanic references, what did you guys wanted to achieve with the general sound of the record, do you think this album shows the true spirit of the band?
Frediablo:
We wanted this to sound exactly what it is... primitive!!! The sound is almost lo-fi and ugly, and that goes hand in hand with what we wanted, and also what would work best along with the lyrics. I don't agree with you though that black metal should have speed and satanic references. Speed is not essential to black metal at all if you ask me. I actually feel that the less speed there is, the more black it becomes.... more primitive and ugly, and it also creates a groove that many black metal bands lack due just to the use of speed and blastbeats. Black metal can also function without any satanical references, even better most of the time... more mature and grim. I feel it's more about atmosphere than anything else, but luckily we all have our own opinion on how, what and why things should sound and be the way they are, so why really bother explaining?

CR: What instrument was the hardest one to play in the recording room?
Frediablo:
Bass, cause the strings are so fucking thick, and I have pussy guitar player fingertip skin!! haha!!

CR: I really like the artwork on the album, the whole black and white design, the front picture I don’t know why reminds me of a Rob Zombie movie or The Texas Chainsaw massacre movie, were you guys directly involve in the design of this artwork or you left it up to DeMida Design?
Frediablo:
I did all the design and layout, because DeMida Design is my own design company, and when you say it reminds you of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, it might have some relevance as I am a huge horror and film freak, and draw a lot of inspiration for my artwork from just that. I love creating artwork and designs much more than I do making music, and I just hope that one day I can do design full time and leave music behind all together, because in all honesty it's beginning to bore me a great fucking deal!!

CR: Have Hemnur played any live gigs, are you guys planning to?
Frediablo:
No, Hemnur is a studio project only, and we will never play live.

CR: Why don’t you tell me a little about your demo Ravnsvart? You know some details that might interest our readers, like where did you record it and the song selection in that work.
Frediablo:
The Ravnsvart demo was recorded in my brother Fug's home studio called Pinhead Studio, and it was basically me just recording while he was not working himself. I spent my time putting riffs together while trying to maintain some level of horror. I used a drum machine on that fucker as well.

CR: What do you think is the single most important aspect of Hemnur’s music that makes the band stands out from other black metal bands?
Frediablo:
I don't think Hemnur's music stand out from other black metal bands at all really.... I mean, we don't try to reinvent the wheel or anything, and we don't give a rat’s ass about trying to be original. We just do what we wanna do, while trying to have as much fun as possible. If we sound like someone else, then so be it… we couldn't care less!!!

CR: Is the whole satanic feeling a must for a black metal band?
Frediablo:
No!!

CR: What other black metal band do you think is doing a fine job, spreading the black metal sound around the world?
Frediablo:
2 bands only in my ears, and that is of course the masters of blackness DARKTHRONE, and also the primitive but tasteful KHOLD.

CR: Do you guys practice any religion?
Frediablo:
Never have and never will. There is no point. It's all based on ignorance and weakness.

CR: What do you think of people that see in every metal fan a demon incarnation?
Frediablo:
Let them think whatever the hell they want!! I don't fucking care!!

CR: What’s your opinion towards the people that burn churches and then blame the whole black metal movement?
Frediablo:
Idiots!!

"I don't think Hemnur's music stand out from other black metal bands at all really.... I mean, we don't try to reinvent the wheel or anything, and we don't give a rat’s ass about trying to be original"

CR: Have you ever felt persecuted or rejected because you play in a black metal band?
Frediablo:
Never!!

CR: It’s kind of obvious that you guys don’t like Christianity at all, but what about the Muslims, the Jews and all the other big religions in the world, what are your feelings towards them?
Frediablo:
Religion is the main foundation and root to all wars and crime against mankind and time has and still proves that to date. There are good intentions in every religion, it's just man twisting shit around and making it something of their own that fucks it up. Each to their own, I guess?

CR: If you had to describe yourself; personality speaking what would you say?
Frediablo:
A big mouth healthy motherfucking bastard!!! Strong, cynical and protective.

CR: Has any band or musician disappointed you, I mean has any band that you look up to has fallen from your grace?
Frediablo:
Metallica and every other band that insist on trying to reinvent the steel after they've reached their 40's. When will these geezers realize that their glory days are far gone, that they should step down and make room for hungrier and fresh acts instead. Jesus fucking Christ… you could stick the Metallica logo on a piece of dogshit today, and it would still sell like a motherfucker... come to think of it, that's exactly what they did with their album St.Anger… haha!!!

CR: Just how important are the record sales for a black metal band; and how important is the opinion of the listeners to you?
Frediablo:
If I was of the notion that I wanted to make a living off of doing music, record sales would mean everything, but personally I don't care if my music sells one, two or 100 thousand copies. I don't do this for financial reasons, and like I said earlier, if I wanted to make money from music, I sure as fucking hell wouldn't be playing metal... especially black metal.

CR: Have you heard of any Latin American black metal band?
Frediablo:
No. I only listen to bands such as Bleeding Through, Throwdown, KoRn, Pantera, Biohazard, Lamb of God, Killswith Engage, and the occasional Darkthrone, but other than that, I don't care. Black metal is fun to play, not to listen to.

CR: Any good releases this past year that you could recommend our readers?
Frediablo:
Bleeding Through if you like music with balls!!... That and Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage and all Pantera albums.

CR: Well thank you for the time it was an honor, hope the record does pretty well, if you have something that you will like to add, please do.
Frediablo:
Just be yourselves… don't take shit from no one and stay healthy!!! Cheers motherfuckers!!!!
